How to Check Cannabis Freshness When Your Delivery Arrives: Labels, Seals, and the Snap Test

How to Check Cannabis Freshness When Your Delivery Arrives

Freshness is the difference between flower that smells like the menu description and flower that smells like hay. Dispensaries do not advertise how long a jar has been on the shelf, but the package in your hand tells you most of what you need. Here is how to check a cannabis delivery for freshness in the first minute after the driver leaves, and what to do if something is off.

Why freshness matters more than the brand name

Cannabinoids and terpenes are volatile. Time, light, heat, and air all degrade them. Terpenes evaporate first, which is why old flower loses its smell before it loses its strength; THC slowly converts to CBN, which changes the effect toward heavier and sleepier. A product that was excellent when it was packaged can be mediocre six months later. That is why two eighths of the same strain from the same cultivator can feel completely different, and why checking freshness is worth thirty seconds every time.

Step 1: Read the label before you open anything

Everything sold by a licensed New Jersey dispensary is lab tested and labeled. Look for the packaging or harvest date where it is printed, the batch or lot number, and the cannabinoid and terpene figures. Recently packaged flower with a high total-terpene number is the best predictor of a good experience. If the only date you can find is far in the past, or the label is missing the batch information, that is worth noting before you open the seal.

Step 2: Check the seal and the packaging

Licensed New Jersey dispensaries sell cannabis in sealed packaging, and the driver hands the order to you directly after checking your ID. The seal should be intact when it reaches you. Opaque or tinted containers protect flower from light; a clear jar that has been under dispensary lights is a small strike against it. Our at-the-door checklist covers what to look at while the driver is still there.

Step 3: The smell, squeeze, and snap test

Once opened, fresh flower is loud. It should smell strongly of whatever its terpene profile promises, not like dry grass or nothing at all. Gently squeeze a bud: it should be slightly springy, not crumble to dust (too dry) and not feel damp or spongy (too moist, which risks mold). Bend a stem; a clean snap means properly cured flower, while a limp bend means excess moisture. Look for a healthy coat of trichomes, the frosty crystals on the surface, and check for any white fuzz or dark spots, which mean the product should not be used.

Freshness for edibles, vapes, and concentrates

Flower is the most sensitive, but other categories have their own tells. Gummies should be soft and uniform, not hardened or sugar-crusted; chocolate should not have the pale bloom that comes from temperature swings. Vape cartridges should have oil that is clear to amber and moves slowly when tilted, with no separation or dark, sludgy layers. Concentrates such as live resin and rosin lose aroma quickly once exposed to air, so a fresh container should hit you with terpene smell the moment you open it. If you order concentrates often, our concentrates guide explains the types and how they differ.

What to do if a delivery seems stale

Contact the dispensary that filled the order. Your receipt names the store, and licensed dispensaries in New Jersey handle product concerns directly, since the product comes from their inventory. Keep the packaging, the label, and the receipt; the batch number is what lets them trace the product. TerpTaxi drivers carry sealed orders from the store to your door, so they cannot open or inspect product, but the store can.

Keep it fresh after it arrives

Once you have checked it, storage is on you. Keep flower in an airtight, opaque container at room temperature and away from light; never the fridge, never the freezer, never a car. The full routine is in How to Keep Cannabis Fresh. And because fresher is better, buy what you will use in a few weeks rather than stockpiling. Delivery makes that easy: TerpTaxi brings orders from partner dispensaries to residential addresses across New Jersey from 9 AM to 10 PM every day, with a $75 minimum in most towns and no minimum in Hoboken.
