A good pre-roll is the lowest-effort way to enjoy flower — no grinder, no papers, no cleanup. But “low effort” isn’t “no technique”: a few small habits separate a smooth, even session from a harsh, canoe-shaped disappointment.
Storage decides more than you’d think
Pre-rolls are mostly air and surface area, which means they dry out faster than jarred flower. A dried-out pre-roll burns hot and harsh. Leave it in its tube until you use it, keep the tube out of hot cars and sunny sills, and buy for the week rather than the season — with same-day delivery there’s no reason to stockpile.
Prep it gently
Before lighting, give the pre-roll a gentle roll between your fingers to even out the pack, and make sure the tip isn’t crimped shut — airflow is everything. If it’s packed too tight to draw, loosening it slightly beats pulling harder.
Light it like you mean it
The most common cause of uneven burning — the dreaded canoe — is a rushed, one-sided light. Rotate the pre-roll while toasting the tip evenly before your first draw, then take slow, easy pulls. Fast, hard pulls burn hot, taste worse, and waste flower.
