Walk into any New Jersey dispensary menu and the accessory section is enormous — grinders in four price tiers, trays, jars, pipes, batteries, cleaning kits. Most of it you do not need. A handful of it genuinely changes how much you enjoy what you bought. Here is the honest short list.
What you actually need on day one
If you ordered flower, three things cover you: something to break it up, something to roll or pack it in, and something airtight to keep the rest in. That is it. Everything else is refinement.
- A grinder — breaks flower evenly so it burns evenly. The single biggest upgrade for anyone rolling their own.
- An airtight glass jar — the plastic bag your flower came in is fine for a day, not for a month.
- A lighter or hemp wick — hemp wick burns cooler than a butane flame, which is why people who care about flavor use it.
The grinder question
A two-piece grinder is cheap and works. A three-piece adds a chamber so the ground flower drops out of the way. A four-piece adds a kief screen at the bottom that collects the trichome dust over time. If you roll regularly, the four-piece pays for itself in found material. If you mostly buy pre-rolls, you may not need one at all.
Storage is the accessory that matters most
Flower dries out and loses aroma fast when it sits in air and light. Terpenes are volatile compounds — that is what makes cannabis smell like anything at all — and they leave first. A small glass jar with a good seal, kept somewhere dark and cool, keeps a purchase tasting the way it did on arrival for weeks instead of days. Our cannabis storage guide goes into what actually helps, and our piece on terpenes explains why aroma and experience track each other so closely.
Batteries, if you vape
Most 510-thread cartridges fit most 510 batteries, but variable-voltage batteries let you run a cart lower, which usually tastes better and burns less. If you are new to concentrates and vape cartridges, a simple variable-voltage battery is a better first buy than anything fancy.
What you can skip
Elaborate rolling machines, novelty pipes you will not clean, and anything sold on the promise of making cannabis stronger. Nothing in the accessory case changes potency. It changes convenience, flavor and how long your purchase lasts.
