New Jersey adults have two legal ways to buy cannabis: walk into a licensed dispensary, or have a licensed delivery service bring it to your door. Neither is always better. Here’s an honest comparison so you can pick the right one for the moment.
When driving to the dispensary wins
If you want to smell the flower, talk to a budtender for ten minutes, or you’re already out running errands near a store, a walk-in visit is hard to beat. It also makes sense if you’re under the $75 delivery minimum — the exception being Hoboken, where Hudsonica delivers with no minimum.
When delivery wins
Delivery wins on time and on discretion. In towns with an in-town partner — Hoboken, Rahway, Maplewood, Mount Holly, Hackettstown — most TerpTaxi orders arrive in 25–40 minutes, which is faster than a round trip with parking. Jersey City runs 35–50 minutes and Newark 40–60. Nobody sees you in a store, the packaging is plain, and the vehicle is unmarked.
Delivery also wins when the nearest store isn’t near
Large parts of New Jersey have no dispensary within a short drive. TerpTaxi delivers across all 21 counties every day from 9 AM to 10 PM, from licensed partner dispensaries, so a town with no storefront still gets same-day access. Browse the full list of counties and towns to see who fills orders where.
The rules that apply either way
Whether you buy in person or by delivery, you must be 21 or older with a valid photo ID, and the same state purchase limits apply — up to 6 ounces of possession and 1,000 mg of THC in edibles per transaction. Delivery adds two rules of its own: the address must be residential, and the driver hands the order to you in person after checking your ID. It can’t be left on a porch.
A quick decision guide
- Under $75 and near a store? Drive (or order in Hoboken).
- Want it in under an hour without leaving the couch? Delivery.
- Don’t want to be seen buying? Delivery.
- Want to compare strains in person? Drive.
- No dispensary within 20 minutes? Delivery.
Plenty of people do both — a store visit when they want to browse, delivery for the weeknight restock. If you’re new to ordering, start with our first-order walkthrough and check the town-by-town delivery windows before you decide.
